What is the MTR Exam?
The MTR Exam is a state-required test administered by the Bureau of Household Goods and Services (BHGS). It ensures that business owners and managers understand the laws and regulations that apply to moving, storage, and household goods services in California.
Do I need to own a truck to apply for a MTR license?
No, BHGS does not require you to own a truck. However you will need to show proof of PLPD and CARGO insurance in order for the beaura to approve your application. If you do not own a truck, it is recommended that you lease a truck for a minimum of 1 year.
Can I apply for a Household Movers License without a USDOT Number or California Motor Carrier (CA) Number?
No. To apply for a Household Movers License in California, you must have a valid USDOT Number and a California (CA) Number if you plan to operate commercial vehicles across state lines or within California. These numbers are required by federal and state regulations to ensure your vehicles are properly registered and meet safety standards.
What type of insurance do I need for a MTR License?
You will need to obtain a Public Liability and Property Damage insurance policy and a CARGO insurance policy. The PLPD insurance policy protects your business against property damage or bodily injury claims. The Cargo insurance policy covers loss or damage to customers’ belongings during transit. The minimum cargo insurance coverage is $20,000 per shipment. If you have employees you will also need Workers' Comp insurance which covers workplace injuries for your employees.
